Top Picks for Traveling The Tuscan Maremma

»Posted

An awesome guest article by Elisa from Maremma Tuscany! Even if you have never been to Tuscany, you can probably imagine its farmhouse villas and breathtaking countryside in an instant. But for most tourists, Tuscany is Florence, Siena and Pisa. Stop. Most don’t realise there is a whole other side to Tuscany. A side that is more wild and authentic. A side that still breathes laidback country days. A side that truly is Tuscany off-the-beaten track. It’s called the Maremma. To discover the Maremma, you have to leave the cities behind and plunge into magnificent Southern Tuscany. Just don’t look for any road signs. The Maremma is a centuries’ old name used by the locals to describe their beautiful surroundings. It’s more of a feeling...

Spring is Coming!

»Posted

As soon as the calendar hit March 21st, the weather in Tuscany started becoming warmer and days sunnier. As if someone had switched on the heating button! After a long winter, it is nice to lighten up your clothing, not to worry so much about catching a cold, and enjoy longer light hours in the glistering sun. Even the air fills up with new fragrances, previously dulled by the freezing temperatures. The cooking scents that during winter days remained trapped inside tightly shut windows, can now roam free and meet your nostrils, enhanced by the warm air and the smell of freshly cut grass and wild flowers. What a bliss! So what can you do to get the most out of the nice spring weather in Tuscany? I would say, simply stay outside as much as you can. There are tons of...

A Day at Calidario Thermal Baths

»Posted

The spring-like temperatures that are blessing Tuscany, and other parts of Italy, since Epiphany have been the perfect addition to an already perfect day of relax at Calidario. I had been at these Tuscan thermal baths in Venturina before, but I had never taken full advantage of all it offers and stayed the residence. I have to say that overall it was a very good experience, but some things could have easily been better. I decided to get there during the weekend of January 9, and got lucky. It was the closing day of the season (they open again on March 8), thus the residence was offered at 45 Euros per night per person instead of 75. In addition, guests of the residence get a discount on both the restaurant and the wellness center entrance, in addition to total...

Thermal Spas Calidario in Venturina

»Posted

The thermal baths Calidario are in Venturina, a small town in Tuscany. It is a fantastic thermal resort complete with all comforts and perfect for a period of deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Here you will immediately feel in touch with nature. The setting is immersed in the splendid nature of the Livorno coastline, just 5 minutes away from the sea. On the spot are a restaurant and a residence with typically Tuscan apartments with all comforts. However, you can access the baths even for just a day and stay elsewhere in Tuscany. The thermal spas of Calidario deepen their roots in ancient history. They were already known and appreciated by the Etruscans, who started here their first foundries. The Romans continued and increased the thermal baths experience, and...

Fivizzano, A Pearl in Lunigiana

»Posted

A pearl lost among the mountains, this is how the great Tuscan poet Carducci defined Fivizzano in Lunigiana, along the valley that rises towards the Passo del Cerreto, on the Apennines crest. It is a pleasant natural environment, poised between hills and mountains. The striking mix of valleys dotted with villages, churches and castles is perfect for a holiday in close contact with nature to find your peace of mind against the backdrop of the Apuan Alps. Despite numerous archaeological discoveries show the presence of settlements already in the Paleolithic, we know nothing of ancient Fivizzano. The first written mention is about the castle near the village Verrucola, which at that time had to be the largest inhabited one, dating 1077. Over the centuries, it was...
