The origins of Nobile di Montepulciano wine are ancient and intimately linked to the history of Montepulciano. The fact that wineries are perfectly integrated into the historic center of the town is proof of it. The archives about the thriving shopping history of this area show that in 1350 the terms and rules for trading and exporting Nobile of Montepulciano wine had already been established. In the second half of 1500 Pope Paul III expressed the exceptional qualities of the wine. Francesco Redi in his poem “Bacchus in Tuscany” called it “the king of all wines”. During the second half of 1700 the wine of Montepulciano was defined and described as “noble”, as an obvious sign of the high quality production procedures. The reputation of Nobile wine spread abroad with Voltaire talking about it in his celebrated “Candide”, while US presidents Martin Van Buren and Thomas Jefferson appreciated its great qualities.
